Powerful Infrastructures for AV Signal Resource/Target Management
Radio/TV channels usually need a Production Control Division (PCR/SCR), to manage and control the input/output production signals and to check if they meet the various in-bound technical or contextual standards. In fact, PCR is the main reference for accessing and regulating all the signals in a Radio/TV Station.
In PSR, all the input signals, from various sources, are made uniform in format, type and level, then using signal distributor cards, are sent to defined switchers and routers until getting their targets. In addition, the final output signals are analyzed, then standardized to be ready for transmitting.
Signal Distribution Routes
The broadcast signals will be routed to some defined targets:
The first route is the monitoring unit where the multi-viewer system prepares the input video signals to be monitored and controlled and the audio signals to be checked. The multi-viewer system runs a pilot session on a set of monitors to be viewed in smaller windows for production QC.
The multi-viewer can also transmit audio/video signals through HDMI and/or HD SDI cables. There is also a Windows-based application by which the video display layout can be customized.
The second route is the matrix switchers which are intended as communication channels between input and output signals. The matrix switchers can route signals to various studios, edit rooms, servers, transmitters,…
The other function of matrix switchers is technical monitoring; a procedure in which a de-embedder separates the audio and video signals to be transmitted to professional audio and video monitoring systems so that the operators can check the quality of their TV content productions.
PCR input signals come from various sources live different TV studios and cameras. Here, the matrix switchers transmit the signals toward the output cross converters which can modify the signal formats and displaces the embedded audio signals (a.k.a. Audio Shuffler) and lets the operators delay the audio signal displacement with respect to the video signal (synchronization).
Audio/Video signals are normally in various formats and standards according to the production, management and broadcasting systems. For maximum compatibility among these formats and standards, Up/Down/Cross Converters are utilized in order to convert SD/HD/3G signals to .each other and to change signal parameters as needed
Audio/video distributors can direct audio/video signals from a single source to several devices. Audio/video distributors can also amplify, and offset signal losses and jitters.
